Could You Have Hypothyroidism and Not Even Know It?

An underactive thyroid, known as hypothyroidism, refers to a condition in which the thyroid doesn’t produce enough thyroid hormones. Thyroid hormones are responsible for controlling the responses of most of the body’s systems, and the hormone deficiency can cause weight gain, fatigue, hair loss, a lack of mental clarity, dry skin, constipation, changes to the menstrual cycle, and other symptoms. Because the symptoms of hypothyroidism are common to other conditions, they often go undiagnosed or are misattributed to conditions such as menopause. Traditional thyroid tests offered by many doctors do not give a full picture of what deficiencies are occurring and how best to treat them—it’s best to get a full panel thyroid test done instead. Hypothyroidism can present in stages, and left untreated, it can cause other, more serious, problems.
