Few things can be as puzzling and frustrating as going firmly on a diet only to find the weight slowly creeping back on. You may find yourself wondering what you did wrong. The answer is, probably nothing—it’s actually pretty common. A clear example is the cast of the popular television show “The Biggest Loser.” A recent study showed that six years after participants had lost an average of 129 pounds each, most had gained approximately 70 percent of it back. Even more interesting is the reason behind the weight gain. Researchers found that dieting had actually impaired their ability to burn as many calories per day as people of similar age and weight who had not dieted—500 calories less, to be precise. The reason behind this could actually be genetic. But that doesn’t mean you can’t achieve and maintain a healthy body weight.
